Windows 7 Sells Itself: A Look at the New Ads

About a year ago, Microsoft finally began fighting back against the snarky Apple "I’m a Mac, I’m a PC" ads with a series of its own advertisements which highlighted the diversity of the PC market. Simply dubbed "I’m a PC," the advertising campaign is still a huge hit, and virtually everyone who sees these ads is taken by how nice they are. Unlike Apple’s sarcastic, borderline libelous advertising, the Microsoft ads feature real PC-using people telling real stories. The contrast with Apple is simply amazing.

Microsoft Security Essentials Review

Last year, Microsoft announced that it was halting development of its highly regarded Windows Live OneCare product (see my review of Windows Live OneCare 2.0) and would instead release a free anti-malware solution codenamed Morro by the end of 2009. Morro, of course, became known as Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), and as promised it is absolutely free and available to all genuine Windows XP, Vista, and 7 users, and will come in both 32-bit and 64-bit variants (32-bit only on XP).

Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 update

We’ve talked extensively about the improvements that Power Pack 3 for Windows Home Server will deliver for users.  We were proud to show off the beta code of Power Pack 3 at the recent CEDIA 2009 custom installer technology show, where we got lots of positive reception to the feature set.  It’s clear that the anticipation of using Windows Home Server with the upcoming Windows 7 client PC operating system is reaching feverish pitch!  OK, maybe that was a slight exaggeration…But the bottom line is that we’ve gotten tremendous feedback (and test coverage) from you, our enthusiasts, around Power Pack 3 – and we couldn’t be more excited.

Microsoft Releases FREE Anti-Virus Software

Microsoft has finally released its free anti-malware software.  The suite is call Windows Security Essentials. After more than a decade of letting third-party vendors do a mediocre job of protecting computers from virii, trojan horses, worms, and spy-ware, Microsoft has finally decided that its time to once-and-for-all provide malware protection designed by people who know the Windows OS best.  Providing it for free via Windows Live not only shows Microsoft’s commitment to providing the safest computing experiences, but still offers users the choice of platforms.  Additionally, users on a budget need no longer worry about having to buy anti-virus software and then pay for annual renewals, nor do home users need to deal with free or trial versions of anti-virus software that hurt performance or application compatibility, or even worse, can’t be completely uninstalled. Give it a try!

Microsoft shows off prototype next-generation office wall

Say what you might about their products on the market, but when it comes to flashy prototypes and revolutionary concepts, Microsoft is indisputably a clear leader in the industry.

The latest of these perpetually next-generation prototypes out of Microsoft Research to be shown to the public is an integrated home office environment that combines the wonders of interactive wall displays, a Microsoft Surface and a digital assistant, albeit with a creepy voice and unsettling-long response time.

Themes In Outlook Web App (OWA) 2010…

Exchange 2007 came with four built-in themes and a flexibility to customize as well. Seattle Sky, Xbox 360, Zune and Carbon Black. Well, the settings are the same in Exchange 2010, but users can no longer change the theme. The option to change the theme within OWA is missing and Microsoft has confirmed that the feature is not available in this release.

In OWA 2007, you could change the theme to the one of your choice (if it is allowed by the admin in the first place), by navigating to Options –> General Settings –> Appearance Section.

Announcing windows live Messenger Web Toolkit v3.5

We’ve been working hard on the Windows Live Messenger Web Toolkit (MWT) which allows you to connect your web site to 330M+ people who use Windows Live Messenger every month! Today we’d like to announce the availability of the Messenger Web Toolkit v3.5 which will enhance the user experience, make it easier to enable sharing via Messenger scenarios on your site (new sharing control), and enable new scenarios (e.g. people who don’t use Messenger will be able to see display pics / names). Specifically, the improvements we have made are:

  • User experience: smoothed out the user experience, added a first run experience, expanded the browser support, increased the performance
  • Developer experience: reduced the amount of code for you to implement “Share via Windows Live” and the Messenger Web Toolkit is now built on the Microsoft Ajax library.
  • New scenarios: Allow people who don’t use Messenger to see display pictures and names of Messenger users.

Web Deployment Tool (x86)

The Web Deployment Tool simplifies the migration, management and deployment of IIS Web servers, Web applications and Web sites. Administrators can use command-line scripting with the Web Deployment Tool to synchronize IIS 6.0 and IIS 7.0 servers or to migrate an IIS 6.0 server to IIS 7.0. The Web Deployment Tool also enables administrators and delegated users to use IIS Manager to deploy ASP.NET and PHP applications to an IIS 7.0 server.

Migrate Web applications between IIS 6.0 and IIS 7.0 with ease
Simplify the planning of your IIS 6.0 to IIS 7.0 migrations by determining incompatibilities and previewing the proposed changes before starting the process. Learning about any potential issues in advance gives you the chance to take corrective measures and simplifies migration.
