Microsoft dials up emerging-market phone push

Microsoft on Monday announced plans for mobile software that aims to allow people in emerging markets to access various Internet programs using lower-end feature phones.

The software, known as OneApp, is due out later this year and should allow people in emerging markets to access services like Facebook, Twitter, and Microsoft’s Windows Live Messenger using the kinds of inexpensive phones most often sold for $20 or $30. Microsoft said Blue Label Telecoms in South Africa will be the first to use OneApp and will use it to offer phones that ship with a dozen mobile applications, including a mobile wallet program as well as the social-networking tools.

Update on Windows 7 in Europe

I want to provide a couple of updates for my friends in Europe today in regards to Windows 7.

I want to start off with an update to our plans for the Windows 7 Family Pack. As I mentioned last month, starting with the launch of Windows 7 on October 22nd, customers will be able to buy a Family Pack in the US & Canada. This allows users to install Windows 7 Home Premium on up to 3 existing Windows PCs for a reduced price. It’s an easy and cost effective way to get customers entire household on Windows 7.

GPU Computing and Windows 7

As we discussed in our earlier blog, at the core of Windows 7 for the first time is the inclusion of the graphics processing unit (GPU) for computing. The GPU is no longer just for graphics. In Windows 7, the CPU and the GPU create a co-processing environment. As a result, Windows 7 PCs with the right balance of CPU and GPU offer a faster, more visual Windows 7 experience.

NVIDIA’s President and CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang talked about GPU Computing in Windows 7 during a keynote presentation at Computex 2009.

Microsoft previews new Xbox controller

Microsoft has allowed the public to get their hands on its new hands-free games controller for the first time.

The US firm showed off the "Natal" technology, designed for use with its Xbox 360 console, at the European games convention gamescom in Germany.

The controller uses a microphone combined with visual and infrared cameras to control the onscreen action.

It was first unveiled at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles in June this year, but had not been on public display until now.

Windows Live Movie Maker – get it now

Microsoft has taken the wraps of Windows Live Movie Maker, “the the one-minute way to turn photos and videos into great-looking movies that are easy to share — for free”.  You can download Windows Live Essentials now and get the new Movie Maker (and what appears to be some bug fixes for the other WL applications, no real signs of Wave 4 yet).

Windows Live Movie Maker Review

When Microsoft launched the “wave 3” version of its Windows Live Essentials suite back in January (see my review), one big piece of the puzzle was missing: Windows Live Movie Maker, a major reworking of the underappreciated but excellent Windows Movie Maker application from Windows XP days (see my review of Movie Maker 2), was still woefully incomplete and in beta form.

Introducing the TechNet Script Center Gallery

The TechNet Script Center Gallery was introduced last week by Microsoft, in an attempt to help simplify the work of IT professionals. The Script Center Gallery, which went live on the TechNet portal on August 13th, 2009, offers an extensive collection of scripts for IT pros. The initiative represents TechNet’s first gallery application and can be accessed via the Scripts tab on the Script Center homepage. In total, the new Script Gallery brings to the table in excess of 4,000 scripts designed for Windows client and Windows Server, including Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows 2000, but the number is bound to grow, especially because of contributions from the community.

Google Caffeine: What it really is

As it invites the world to play in a mysterious sandbox it likes to call "Caffeine," Google is testing more than just a "next-generation" search infrastructure. It’s testing at least a portion of a revamped software architecture that will likely underpin all of its online applications for years to come.

Speaking with The Reg, über-Googler Matt Cutts confirms that the company’s new Caffeine search infrastructure is built atop a complete overhaul of the company’s custom-built Google File System, a project two years in the making. At least informally, Google refers to this file system redux as GFS2.

Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Exchange 2010

From September through November, launch events for Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Exchange 2010 are happening across the US.

Boston’s launch event will be on October 5th at the AMC Boston Common 19. (Other regional stops are NYC on October 20 and Philly on September 28.)

The event will feature content for developers and IT pros. Of course the content will be excellent, but as an added bonus, attendees will get a copy of Windows 7!

Microsoft Exchange 2010 buzz grows louder

The release-to-manufacturing (RTM) buzz around Microsoft Exchange 2010 is starting to grow louder. I’m hearing from various partners and customers it could be finalized any time now, maybe even before this month is up.

Exchange Server is directly and indirectly at the crux of a number of new and recently announced products from Microsoft. The company’s Mac Business Unit announced on August 13 that the 2010 version of Mac Office will include Outlook, rather than Entourage, as its new e-mail client. The next Mac Office release also will feature improved Exchange and Exchange Online connectivity, the Softies said.  (Microsoft Mac Office customers who need better Exchange connectivity now can use the just-finalized Entourage Web Services, Microsoft officials said.)
