Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Beta 2

Today Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Beta 2 is available for download. I’d like to highlight a few new features and some recent developments:

· Scalability and performance. We’ve continued to improve scalability, regularly testing on the 1,000 node cluster in Microsoft Research—we plan to pursue Top500 runs that prove much greater scalability. We also know customers want to make use of spare processing cycles as part of their overall HPC infrastructures. Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Beta 2 now integrates with workstations running Windows 7, enabling organizations to use them as cluster compute nodes.

Hands-On Look at What’s New in Office 2010

Now that we’ve had some time to play with the Office 2010 Professional Beta, we thought we’d share what’s new and useful inside Microsoft’s big suite. Take a gander at the pictorial evidence below.

Overall, Office 2010 is not the kind of leap forward that Windows 7 was from Vista (or, for most PC upgraders, from XP). It adds a lot of stuff that’s previously been available only through plug-ins, makes performing the basic tasks of opening, printing, and sharing documents a good deal more convenient, and throws in a few new features that will expand the repertoire of those who really know their Office.

Adobe releases new Flash, AIR betas

Adobe Labs on Monday released test versions of two closely related foundations for Net-based applications, Flash Player 10.1 and AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) 2.

Flash is widely used to bring streaming video, interactive graphics, and games to browsers; AIR, with Flash built in, is a foundation for other desktop applications. Both are instrumental to Adobe’s effort to stay ahead of the gradually broadening feature set of HTML and related Web standards.

Visio 2010 Beta coming soon…

It’s been several months since the Technical Preview was released and we started talking about Visio 2010 on this blog.  The product team has been hard at work responding to your feedback, fixing bugs and polishing the application.  Next month we are scheduled to release the Visio 2010 Beta, which will be open to the public.  If you haven’t had the opportunity to try Visio 2010 for yourself, this is your chance.

Sometimes it’s hard to wait patiently for new software releases, so to put your mind at ease we’ve created a special alert system that will notify you when you can download the Beta.  Head over to http://visiotoolbox.com/2010/ and click on the big green button.  You’ll also find a handy diagram explaining the software delivery process (approximately) and several other pages highlighting some of the new capabilities of Visio 2010 and Visio Services.
