Microsoft: Security Essentials final edition in coming weeks

Microsoft’s Security Essentials team has confirmed the final version of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) will be made available in the coming weeks.
MSE is Microsoft’s free anti-virus and anti-spyware product that is set to replace Microsoft’s paid Windows Live OneCare subscription service which was withdrawn earlier this year. In an email to beta testers the team thanked testers for their participation and encouraged them to upgrade to version 1.0.1500.0 of the beta to ensure a "smooth experience". Neowin exclusively revealed Security Essentials in June when it was codenamed "Morro". Morro was renamed Security Essentials and appeared in beta form in late June.

Logos, favicons coming to paid search listings in Bing

Microsoft will launch a pilot this month to test new paid search ad formats using logos and favicons embedded in listings. The icons expand on the traditional two simple text lines and link. The formats are intended to make ads pop in search results and to encourage advertisers and media buyers to allocate more paid search campaign dollars to Bing.

SkyDrive to become the center stage of Windows Live?

With the recent series of updates to Windows Live’s web services (Calendar, Hotmail, Photos, SkyDrive and more), we’re seeing a tip of the iceberg of what’s to come with Windows Live Wave 4 (in fact, we know this because all of the web services have been updated to v15). However, these are no way reflective of what Wave 4 is all about and the recent updates seemed more to simply address what customers wanted with Windows Live. So if this is not it, what are we to expect for the future of Windows Live?

Courier: First Details of Microsoft’s Secret Tablet

image It feels like the whole world is holding its breath for the Apple tablet. But maybe we’ve all been dreaming about the wrong device. This is Courier, Microsoft’s astonishing take on the tablet.

Courier is a real device, and we’ve heard that it’s in the "late prototype" stage of development. It’s not a tablet, it’s a booklet. The dual 7-inch (or so) screens are multitouch, and designed for writing, flicking and drawing with a stylus, in addition to fingers. They’re connected by a hinge that holds a single iPhone-esque home button. Statuses, like wireless signal and battery life, are displayed along the rim of one of the screens. On the back cover is a camera, and it might charge through an inductive pad, like the Palm Touchstone charging dock for Pre.

Firefox gets an early taste of 3D Web standard

A nascent technology called WebGL for bringing hardware-accelerated 3D graphics to the Web is getting a lot closer to reality.

Last week, programmers began building WebGL into Firefox’s nightly builds, the developer versions used to test the latest updates to the open-source browser. Also this month, programmers began building WebGL into WebKit, the project that’s used in both Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome.

HP’s Strange DreamScreen

image It isn’t a full-on tablet PC, and it has more features than a common digital picture frame. HP’s new DreamScreen is a portable tablet that can run video, pictures and music. It can be used with a home WiFi network; however, once it’s online, it can only use built-in apps for Internet radio, social networking and local playback utilities, not browse the Web.

Microsoft to release free security software soon

Microsoft plans to release the final version of its free antivirus software soon, according to a note sent to testers late Sunday.

"The final version of Microsoft Security Essentials will be released to the public in the coming weeks," Microsoft said in the note.

Microsoft first announced its plans for the product, then code-named Morro, last November, at the same time the company said it was scrapping its paid Windows Live OneCare product.

Office Web Applications Tech Preview

Today, Microsoft is making a so-called Tech Preview version of its long-awaited Office Web Applications (OWA) services available for limited testing. As of this writing, I haven’t had a lot of hands-on time with OWA, but because of the tremendous excitement over this product, I want to provide a quick heads-up about what’s going on here, and when you can expect to try it yourself.
