Microsoft wireless keyboard hacked from 50 metres

Swiss researchers say they can log keystrokes from Microsoft’s wireless keyboards from up to 50 metres away using special radio equipment, and are close to being able to control affected computers remotely.

The protocol for securing some of Microsoft’s wireless keyboards has been cracked, opening up the possibility of keystroke logging, according to Swiss security company Dreamlab Technologies.

Microsoft’s Wireless Optical Desktop 1000 and 2000 keyboards communicate by transmitting radio signals to the sound card in a user’s computer. The data stream is encrypted using an exclusion-or (XOR) cipher, which is not strong enough to secure the communication, according to Dreamlab’s senior security specialist, Max Moser.

“This is nothing like a crypto-algorithm,” Moser told ZDNet Australia sister site ZDNet.co.uk. “An exclusion-or binary is really a simple mathematical idea. You can crack the cipher by hand. You take two values, write both lines and look at the different digits. When either the top or the lower line is 1, you write 1. If both are 0, you write 0. For me, this is just obfuscation [rather than encryption].”

Windows Live OneCare 2.0 Review

Windows Live OneCare has had a rocky history, but what gets lost in all the silliness is that this product is trendsetting, innovative, and effective at what it does. The latest version, Windows Live OneCare 2.0, is the best yet, and it fixes most of my complaints with the lackluster 1.6 version (see my review) while adding a suite of new functionality that complements the built-in security and PC health features found in Windows Vista. If all you’ve heard about OneCare is how bad it is, I’ve got a news flash for you: None of that is true.

Windows Media Services 2008 for Windows Server 2008 RC1

This software is an optional supplement to Windows Server 2008 RC1. In Windows Server 2008 RC1, the Streaming Media Services role (which includes the latest version of Windows Media Services) and remote administration tools are not included in Server Manager. To obtain the new features and tools available in Windows Media Services for Windows Server 2008 RC1, such as the built-in WMS Cache/Proxy plug-in, you must obtain and run the appropriate Streaming Media Services role installer file on the updated platform.

These Microsoft Update Standalone Package (MSU) files install either 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) versions (as noted in the file names) of:

  • Windows Media Services and the rest of the Streaming Media Services role in Server Manager, on “full” installations of Standard and Enterprise editions of Windows Server 2008 RC1
  • The Streaming Media Services Server Core role, on “Server Core” installations of Standard and Enterprise editions of Windows Server 2008 RC1
  • The Windows Media Services snap-in for Microsoft Management Console (MMC) on a computer that is running the Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate edition of the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 1 Overview and Screenshots

This week, Microsoft shipped the Release Candidate 1 (RC1) version of Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), a near-final look at the last XP service pack. I’ve categorized XP SP3 as a long, final goodbye to an old friend, and booting into XP to install this update certainly brought back some nostalgic memories. But seriously, folks: It’s time to walk away. There’s just nothing compelling here when you compare XP with SP3 to its much newer and improved counterpart, Windows Vista (see my Vista Activity Center).

Second Windows Home Server Update

Microsoft is getting ready its second update to Windows Home Server, for
delivery to customers on Tuesday, November 27. Microsoft posted notice of its
update plans to the WHS blog on November 20.

“The main benefit of the update is that it will improve the remote
access experience for Windows Home Server users by providing them with a
‘trusted SSL certificate’ for their home servers. That means customers will be
able to access their home server from outside the home more seamlessly, without
any security warnings,” according to the post.

The forthcoming update also will add a new “Delete All” option for users who
want to delete all home computer backups shared on a WHS system. The update
also adds some Shared Folder and Server Storage enhancements, the Softies said.
Microsoft pushed out to users its first update to WHS in September.

Company officials said their plan it to deliver new fixes and updates to
customers on an ongoing basis.
