Sneak peek of what’s coming in Windows Live Movie Maker

Last month, the Windows Live Movie Maker team made a blog post with a status update on what’s been happening to Movie Maker. To give you a recap, in the post Mike Torres offered some glimpses of what to expect from the new version, including more rich-editing capabilities (more transitions, trim, split, multiple soundtracks), “some sort of a timeline”, and a simple interface that would “allow more experienced people to go deeper when they need to”.

Today I was fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the new version. The first thing I’ve noticed is a more comprehensive ribbon menu with much more functionalities compared to the version we’ve been seeing since December last year. First things first, here’s a screenshot of the newly updated Movie Maker:

Microsoft agrees to give choice of browsers to Windows 7 users in Europe

Microsoft is willing to give Windows 7 users in Europe a choice of browsers, rather than simply no browser.

The European Commission (EC)announced on its Web site on July 24 that Microsoft has now proposed as part of settlement talks to allow a “ballot screen“ to  be included in Windows 7. Microsoft initially was dead-set against allowing the inclusion of a ballot screen which would prompt users at set-up to select among a number of different browsers, including Internet Explorer (IE) 8, as its legal representatives made clear earlier this year.

802.11n Standard Could Be Finally Approved by September 11

The next-generation wireless 802.11n standard could be made official earlier than expected, according to a recent email from Bob Heile, the chairman of the IEEE 802.15 working group on Personal Area Networks. The mail states that the IEEE 802.11n draft standard has been set for approval at the Standards Review Committee, or RevCom. If 802.11n becomes official, this could set the start to an upcoming wave of new routers and

chips supporting the wireless connectivity standard. There will also be questions regarding the backwards compatibility of the official 802.11n with the previously released draft version of the 802.11n.

When will you get Windows 7 RTM?

I recognize this is an important question to have answered. Many of you have said you want to know exactly when you will be able to get your hands on RTM. Last Monday, I gave an update on RTM to close out some myths. In that update, I also gave a broad timeline on when different groups of people – or “audiences” – would get the final RTM code.

While I have nothing new to add regarding RTM today, I do however have more precise information to give on when you will be able to get RTM. Again, when you can get RTM depends on who you are.

In another move which may or may not be part of its ongoing attempts to appease European antitrust authorities, Microsoft is changing the way Internet Explorer (IE) 8 will prompt users about making IE their default browser.
