P2V Migration for Software Assurance Beta 2

P2V Migration adds documentation and support of System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Zero Touch Installation!

P2V Migration for Software Assurance can now be implemented using System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Operating System Deployment as well as native Lite Touch Installation with the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010. Computer refresh, replace and restore task sequence templates for Configuration Manager are included and documented in this Beta release.

P2V Migration for Software Assurance Explained

By now the announcements have gone out for the Beta, been blogged about and seen in other social networking channels, so I thought I would do something a bit more in depth on this for the Springboard Blog.

A little (recent) history…

In Fall of 2009 there was a perfect storm of tools and automation to enable something I have wanted to do for some time, automate local physical-to-virtual migration of a Windows client machine and redeliver and integrate that old environment within a new Windows build using full automation.

Microsoft P2V Migration tool beta

The Microsoft Deployment Toolkit team is working on a new solution incorporating Sysinternals Disk2VHD into the desktop migration process: P2V Migration for Software Assurance, and we’d like your feedback on it!

Even the most skilled IT shops, with resources to work through application compatibility challenges, often find a few users blocking roll-outs to entire sites or larger numbers of users due to:

  • Compatibility of specialized, region or user-specific applications, browser customizations or USB device drivers.
  • Missing installation files or media to install applications or drivers for testing or redelivery.
  • Critical users who cannot risk losing any functionality of their current desktop environments and require a working backup before moving to Windows 7.
