Users to get Office 2010 on May 12

Microsoft is specifying a real date on which business users will be able to get their hands on Office 2010 and SharePoint Server 2010: May 12.

Consumers will have to wait until June to buy the product online and at retail, Microsoft officials said on March 5, via a post to the Microsoft Office 2010 Engineering blog.

Office 2010 is on Track for an April RTM

The Office team has just posted some great news on their blog.  Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010 are all on track to RTM next month!

Today’s post is just a quick status update to keep everyone in the loop on the progress Office 2010 is making, as well as to provide finalized details for our Office 2010 Technology Guarantee.

Starting today, consumers who purchase and activate Office 2007 will be able to download Office 2010 at no additional cost when it becomes available in June 2010.

Office 2010 System Requirements

Can I use Office 2010 on the same hardware I’m using to run Office 2007?

In most cases, yes! CPU and RAM requirements for Office 2010 are the same as for Office 2007, so if your computer meets the Office 2007 system requirements, you can run Office 2010. A graphics chipset will help boost the performance of certain features and disk footprint has increased (more on these points later), but as general rules:

  • If your current computer can run Office 2007, it can run Office 2010.
  • If you’re purchasing a new laptop or netbook, it can run Office 2010.
  • If you have a computer with a multi-core processor, it can run Office 2010 even faster.
  • If your computer is currently running Office 2003, it’s possible that it can run Office 2010 (check the requirements to be sure).

Top 10 reasons Office 2010 is good for schools

I’ve been using Office 2010 for a few months now, and over time I’ve realised that there is a lot of clever stuff hidden inside this new version.

When I say “hidden”, I mean that in a positive way. One of the big things with Office 2010 is that there are a huge number of things which don’t change – things like the Ribbon menu and all of the new file formats which arrived with Office 2007. The benefit of this is that it is easier for users to migrate, but as a user, it has meant it’s taken me a little while to find the things which are very new.

One of the underlying things is that all of the applications work much more effectively in an Internet connected world – and use that to improve users’ ability to save and share information.

Hands-On Look at What’s New in Office 2010

Now that we’ve had some time to play with the Office 2010 Professional Beta, we thought we’d share what’s new and useful inside Microsoft’s big suite. Take a gander at the pictorial evidence below.

Overall, Office 2010 is not the kind of leap forward that Windows 7 was from Vista (or, for most PC upgraders, from XP). It adds a lot of stuff that’s previously been available only through plug-ins, makes performing the basic tasks of opening, printing, and sharing documents a good deal more convenient, and throws in a few new features that will expand the repertoire of those who really know their Office.

Microsoft killing off Office Accounting product

Microsoft has decided that its Office Accounting product just doesn’t add up.

The software maker said on Friday that it plans next month to stop distributing the accounting product line, ending the latest in a series of efforts to take on market leader Intuit.

The accounting product line was launched in 2005 amid some fanfare, but failed to grab much market share and was later pulled from retail shelves in favor of online-only sales.

New Ways to Try and Buy Microsoft Office 2010

We’re thrilled about the growing number of people who are using Microsoft Office every day to get things done at work, at home, at school and on the go. For instance:

  • 500 million people worldwide use Microsoft Office
  • From July, 2008 through June, 2009 – Office 2007 experienced 92% year over year growth in trials, equating to 23 million trial downloads
  • Office 2007 Home and Student edition has been the top selling PC software title at US retail for the last two years

On the heels of such positive momentum, we’re excited to talk about big improvements in the way we’ll deliver the next version of Office to consumers.
