Exchange 2010 SP1 FAQ and Known Issues

Last week Microsoft released Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1. It has received some great feedback and reviews from customers, experts, analysts, and the Exchange community.

The starting point for SP1 setup/upgrade should be the What’s New in SP1, SP1 Release Notes, and Prerequisites docs. As with any new release, there are some frequently asked deployment questions, and known issues, or issues reported by some customers.

Hotmail is gradually switching on Exchange ActiveSync for push mail

Microsoft is gradually enabling Hotmail push email support for a wide range of phones including the iPhone, Windows Phone devices and Android.

Microsoft is introducing the support using Exchange ActiveSync, available on nearly 300 million phones. With push email you can sychronize email between your phone and the web, and also synchronize calendar and contacts. Microsoft originally revealed its plans back in April this year.

New High Availability Features in Exchange 2010 SP1

The following new features for high availability and improvements to existing high availability features are available in SP1:

  • Continuous replication – block mode
  • Active mailbox database redistribution
  • Improved Outlook cross-site connection behavior and experience
  • Enhanced datacenter activation coordination support
  • New and enhanced management and monitoring scripts
  • Improvements in failover performance

Today at the Microsoft Tech•Ed Europe 2009 conference in Germany, Microsoft Business Division President Stephen Elop announced that Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 is now available worldwide to help businesses reduce costs, protect communications and delight e-mail users. Along with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, Exchange Server 2010 is part of a generation of solutions designed for increased business productivity and cost savings.

In today’s challenging economic environment, innovative use of new information technologies can result in improved operational efficiency and reduced costs. The combination of cost savings coupled with improved productivity and innovation is defined as “the New Efficiency.”
