Is Apple really using Windows Azure to power iCloud?

Over the past month, I received a couple of tips claiming that Apple was a Windows Azure customer.

At first, I just dismissed the tips as nothing but a crazy rumor. Then I got more serious and started asking around, to no avail.

But once Apple launched the beta of its iCloud iMessage service, the Infinite Apple site, along with a few other blogs, analyzed the traffic patterns and found that Apple appeared to be using both Azure and Amazon Web Services for hosting.

Eager for the Apple iPad? You’ll finally be able to get your hands on the tablet in the U.S. starting Saturday, April 3.

Apple announced Friday that the Wi-Fi version of the iPad will launch in the United States on that date, followed by the Wi-Fi + 3G edition later in the month. Additionally, both versions will hit Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, and the U.K. in late April.

Starting March 12, consumers can preorder both the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models from Apple’s online store or reserve a Wi-Fi version to pick up on April 3 at any Apple retail store.

Apple iTunes 9

In keeping with my love-hate relationship with Apple, I’ve had a love-hate relationship with the company’s dominant iTunes application as well. Over the years, iTunes has evolved from a simple, single-purpose media player into a bloated, slow, mess of an application that manages an amazing array of content types and devices. Apple being Apple, most of this functionality is designed to keep its users from dabbling in competing solutions of any kind, and Apple’s software, devices, and online services are very much designed to keep you locked in to the Apple family of products at all times. The key to this lock-in strategy, the nexus, is iTunes.

Office 2008 12.2.1 available today for mac’s

Today, we released Office 2008 12.2.1. This release fixes issues where some users were unable to open some of their XML-based files in PowerPoint and Excel.

This issue was accidentally introduced when we introduced stronger checking of our new XML-based file formats. In short, we were looking for a particular XML tag, and some files were either missing this file or didn’t have it in the form that we were expecting. Most users didn’t see this issue, and for users who did see this issue, it usually wasn’t affecting all of their files.
