Windows 8 will be available on…October 26th

Steven Sinofsky announced at Microsoft’s annual sales meeting that customers will be able to get Windows 8 – whether in upgrade fashion or on a new PC – starting on October 26th. Earlier this month at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, Tami Reller told attendees Windows 8 would be available in October. But now everyone has a specific date to mark on their calendars.

Protecting user files with File History

File History is a backup application that continuously protects your personal files stored in Libraries, Desktop, Favorites, and Contacts folders. It periodically (by default every hour) scans the file system for changes and copies changed files to another location. Every time any of your personal files has changed, its copy will be stored on a dedicated, external storage device selected by you. Over time, File History builds a complete history of changes made to any personal file.

Windows 8 RTM coming first week of August

Microsoft’s Tami Reller has just announced at the Worldwide Partner Conference that the Windows 8 Release to Manufacturing (RTM) stage is on track for the first week of August, with a general availability occurring in October; devices are expected in “late October”. When the product does ship, it will be available in 109 languages across 231 markets worldwide.

Previously it was speculated Windows 8 would reach RTM in late July, but this rumours has since been quashed with the first official word at WPC 2012. There could be a possible RTM sign-off in the coming weeks of July, but the actual release will occur in early August; so it’s not very far away at all.

multi-monitor enhancements coming in Windows 8

Another major improvement that is coming is the multi-monitor taskbar that many users have complained about the lack of in Windows 7. In Windows 8, users will have the option to show the taskbar on secondary monitors, and then there will be options to choose how the application icons are shown on these taskbars. By default the app buttons will be shown on both taskbars, but you can set it to show app buttons only on the taskbar belonging to the monitor where the application is open.

Windows 8 Media Center / Player

Given the changing landscape, the cost of decoder licensing, and the importance of a straight forward edition plan, we’ve decided to make Windows Media Center available to Windows 8 customers via the Add Features to Windows 8 control panel (formerly known as Windows Anytime Upgrade). This ensures that customers who are interested in Media Center have a convenient way to get it. Windows Media Player will continue to be available in all editions, but without DVD playback support. For optical discs playback on new Windows 8 devices, we are going to rely on the many quality solutions on the market, which provide great experiences for both DVD and Blu-ray.

Windows 8 Release Preview coming June

Steven Sinofsky, president of Microsoft’s Windows Division, took the stage for the first day of the Windows Developer Days conference in Japan to announce the Release Preview of Windows 8 will launch during the first week of June. Windows Server 8 – Deduplication

One of the long overdue features of Windows Server 8, is Data Deduplication. Deduplication can be enabled for NTFS volumes, and is part of the File Server role.
Deduplication works by examining the files on the disk, looking for duplicate files, once one is found the duplicate file will be referenced to the first file found. This means that two identical 1GB files, would only take up 1GB (The First File) + 4KB (The second file that points to the first file). This will intern allow us to store much more data onto a single disk.

Installing Deduplication –

The first step is to add the data deduplication role service; this is done in the new Server Manager and is a single step.

dedupe

Once the role is installed, the next steps are to start the Data Deduplication Service (ddpsvc) and set it to Automatic startup. This is done in the normal services management snap-in. Then, each eligible volume needs to be configured for deduplication. Keep in mind that C:\ drives are not supported for NTFS deduplication, Configuring a volume for deduplication is done by right-clicking on the volume in Server Manager and selecting “Configure Deduplication”.

de2

There are two primary options for deduplication, folder and file type exclusions. Those are configured in Server Manager when deduplication is configured. Microsoft don’t recommend deduplication certain file type such as; SQL Databases, VHD Files, Exchange Database. As this could result in a performance decrease. (Testing in a small lab, the performance decrease was unnoticeable.)

Windows 8: Where’s our hardware reimagined?

Summary: I want to see, touch or buy a Windows tablet that will get me excited about Windows 8. Six months or so from launch, there’s still nothing filling that gap.

Along with “fast and fluid,” one of the most (over) used catch phrases about Windows 8 is “Windows reimagined.” I’d assume we also are going to see some “reimagined” PCs, too, that will make using the touch-centric Windows 8 less painful and more compelling.
