Windows 7 passes Vista in usage

In less than a year on the market, Windows 7 is now being used more than predecessor Windows Vista, according to market researcher Netmarketshare.

For July, Windows 7 was used on 14.46 percent of devices accessing the Internet, compared with Windows Vista’s 14.34 percent, marking the first time the newer version surpassed its predecessor. Microsoft has said that 175 million copies of Windows 7 have been purchased since the product was released last fall.

Windows Phone 7 in-depth preview

Microsoft still has a few months before it intends to get the first volley of Windows Phone 7-based products to the marketplace, but we’ve recently been provided with reference hardware — a not-for-retail Samsung called "Taylor" that’s closely modeled on the Symbian-based i8910HD — to get a feel for where they’re at as the clock ticks down. Is this shaping up to be a killer platform for the next generation of high-end smartphones? And more importantly, can it win customers? Read on for our first take.

Developers to get Windows Phone 7 devices in July

So far, developers wanting to write programs for Windows Phone 7 have had to rely on a software emulator to see how their programs will run. Starting next month, though, the first group of developers will get their hands on actual devices.

While Microsoft says it won’t have enough phones for all developers, it is working to make sure that the devices aren’t limited to just the big software developers.

Microsoft delivers public test build of Embedded Compact 7 operating system

On June 1, Microsoft made available to anyone interested a public test build of its Windows Embedded Compact 7 operating system, the product codenamed “Chelan.”

Embedded Compact 7 has been the subject of more-than-usual scrutiny, in that there have been reports that it will be the core of the Windows Phone OS 7.0 operating system that will power Windows Phone 7 devices. (Last I heard from Microsoft, officials were denying that Compact 7 will be at the heart of the first generation of Windows Phone 7 devices, in spite of statements by some Microsoft employees that claimed this would be the case.  Still not clear on why the Softies are continuing to fan the flames of  confusion due to unnecessary secrecy in this matter…)

Windows 7 Battery Notification Messages

Over the past week we have seen a little bit of blogosphere activity regarding Windows 7 and batteries, specifically the new Windows 7 message “Considering replacing your battery”. Since this is related to the engineering of Windows 7 we’re going to use this blog to provide an update to people. As we have talked about many times, we have a relentless focus on the quality of Windows 7 and we take seriously any reports we receive that indicate a potential problem that could result in a significant failure of the OS.

Windows 7 Sells Itself: A Look at the New Ads

About a year ago, Microsoft finally began fighting back against the snarky Apple "I’m a Mac, I’m a PC" ads with a series of its own advertisements which highlighted the diversity of the PC market. Simply dubbed "I’m a PC," the advertising campaign is still a huge hit, and virtually everyone who sees these ads is taken by how nice they are. Unlike Apple’s sarcastic, borderline libelous advertising, the Microsoft ads feature real PC-using people telling real stories. The contrast with Apple is simply amazing.
