P2V Migration for Software Assurance Explained

By now the announcements have gone out for the Beta, been blogged about and seen in other social networking channels, so I thought I would do something a bit more in depth on this for the Springboard Blog.

A little (recent) history…

In Fall of 2009 there was a perfect storm of tools and automation to enable something I have wanted to do for some time, automate local physical-to-virtual migration of a Windows client machine and redeliver and integrate that old environment within a new Windows build using full automation.

New test build of Windows 7 SP1 goes to select Microsoft partners

Microsoft has released a beta refresh of its Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack (SP) 1 to selected PC and Technology Adoption Program (TAP) partners, company officials confirmed on August 30.

Microsoft made the refresh build — the build number of which is said to be Build No. 7601.17077 — available to a select group of testers on August 27. There’s no word (so far) on whether there is anything new in that refresh.

  • Making it easy to access the PCs you use from anywhere
  • Getting your files and folders on the PCs you use regularly
  • Giving you enough space to sync your most important files and folders to the cloud
  • Providing simple document collaboration over the web using SkyDrive

Microsoft readies Beta 2 of Windows Live Essentials 2011

Microsoft is preparing to deliver a second beta of the next version of its Windows Live Essentials suite next week.

That’s the word from blogger Francisco Martin Garcia, who posted about the coming beta on his blog on August 11. (Garcia’s had a good track record on predicting Microsoft delivery dates for various consumer wares.) Enthusiast site Neowin also is reporting the second beta will hit next week, naming Tuesday, August 18 as the likely delivery date. I am hearing the 18th is Microsoft’s target for the beta, as well.

For July, Windows 7 was used on 14.46 percent of devices accessing the Internet, compared with Windows Vista’s 14.34 percent, marking the first time the newer version surpassed its predecessor. Microsoft has said that 175 million copies of Windows 7 have been purchased since the product was released last fall.

Hotmail rollout picks up steam!

Here at Hotmail, we’ve been busy getting our latest release out to our customers – upgrading server clusters, building the new indexes for conversation threading, and making tweaks to our site metrics and deployment software. This deployment was complex, but it has been one of the smoothest in Hotmail history. We know many of you have been anxious to get the new Hotmail for your own accounts ever since we announced the new features, and we appreciate your patience and your feedback.

A behind-the-scenes look at designing the new Hotmail: part one

One of the things we hear about the most is inbox overload: folks want to find important emails quickly. Whether it’s an important back-and-forth conversation with friends or a YouTube video that brightened your day, it can be hard to find the messages that matter most. When we set out to design the new Hotmail, our main goal was to solve the problem of too much clutter.

Windows Phone 7 in-depth preview

Microsoft still has a few months before it intends to get the first volley of Windows Phone 7-based products to the marketplace, but we’ve recently been provided with reference hardware — a not-for-retail Samsung called "Taylor" that’s closely modeled on the Symbian-based i8910HD — to get a feel for where they’re at as the clock ticks down. Is this shaping up to be a killer platform for the next generation of high-end smartphones? And more importantly, can it win customers? Read on for our first take.
