Windows 8′s user account roaming feature

win8roamingThe feature, which appears to be only available for “Linked” Windows accounts (presumably to Windows Live), allows for users to “roam” to different computers and devices with their various settings and configurations, automatically applied.

The range of settings for roaming include the desktop wallpaper, Aero glass colour, accessibility options, language options, applications settings (probably only for AppX packaged apps), Windows settings and Wi-Fi profiles and Windows-managed passwords.

As someone who uses both a desktop and laptop, this is clearly going to be one of the killer features of Windows 8.

Migrate iPhone applications to Windows Phone

Microsoft released a developer tool on April 29 that is aimed at helping iPhone developers port their applications more easily to Windows Phones.

Microsoft officials described the new API (application programming interface) mapping tool as similar to a translation dictionary. From a new post on the Windows Phone Developer Blog:

Microsoft F#, April 2011 Community Technology Preview

F# is a productive, typed functional and object-oriented language for the .NET platform. This CTP release includes the F# compiler and tools, as well as optional Visual Studio integration for F# development.

Microsoft codename ‘Redhawk’ lives… in Windows 8

I’ve refrained from posting much on the Windows 8 under-the-hood features that individuals with access to recently leaked Windows 8 builds have been unlocking as of late.

But I couldn’t hold back from mentioning one of the recently discovered tidbits, as it hearkens back to a Microsoft codename about which I wrote years ago.

Microsoft’s Streetside launches in Europe

In a move aimed at trying to be more competitive with Google’s StreetView mapping service, Microsoft today announced that their version entitled “Streetside” was launching across Europe.

The service, which has been around in America for some time, will once again see large cameras on the top of cars driving around European streets and mapping the locations. Microsoft began mapping out areas around London today according to the BBC, with the company starting work in major cities around Europe next month.

Office for Mac 2011 SP1 released

Microsoft delivered its first Service Pack for its 2011 Mac version of Office on Tuesday.

Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 1 includes increased stability, security, and some new features to the suite. Microsoft says it will improve Outlook syncing support and include some performance enhancements. The update also enables calendar syncing between Outlook for Mac and Apple’s Sync Services. The feature allows users to Sync data between Outlook’s Calendar and devices such as the iPhone or iPad.

IE9 Reaches 3.6% Usage Share on Windows 7

SOFTWARE MAKER Microsoft has been enjoying something of a success with one web usage outfit reporting that its Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) web browser is used by 3.6 per cent of all Windows 7 users on the web.

Microsoft releases Windows Thin PC public test build

Microsoft has made available for download, as of March 28, the first Windows Thin PC Community Technology Preview (CTP) test build.

Although the final product will be available only to Software Assurance volume licensees, Microsoft is making the Windows Thin PC (Win TPC) available to the general public, officials said. The test build is available via the Microsoft Connect site and — interestingly — is listed under Windows Embedded Standard.
