Microsoft Announces Exchange Server 2010 Availability and Wave of Innovations at Tech•Ed Europe 2009

Today at the Microsoft Tech•Ed Europe 2009 conference in Germany, Microsoft Business Division President Stephen Elop announced that Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 is now available worldwide to help businesses reduce costs, protect communications and delight e-mail users. Along with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, Exchange Server 2010 is part of a generation of solutions designed for increased business productivity and cost savings.

In today’s challenging economic environment, innovative use of new information technologies can result in improved operational efficiency and reduced costs. The combination of cost savings coupled with improved productivity and innovation is defined as “the New Efficiency.”

Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 update

We’ve talked extensively about the improvements that Power Pack 3 for Windows Home Server will deliver for users.  We were proud to show off the beta code of Power Pack 3 at the recent CEDIA 2009 custom installer technology show, where we got lots of positive reception to the feature set.  It’s clear that the anticipation of using Windows Home Server with the upcoming Windows 7 client PC operating system is reaching feverish pitch!  OK, maybe that was a slight exaggeration…But the bottom line is that we’ve gotten tremendous feedback (and test coverage) from you, our enthusiasts, around Power Pack 3 – and we couldn’t be more excited.

Backup Windows Server 2008

Backing up a server a a common task, which many fail to do. You may have created a backup job that backs up the data on the server, but what about the system configuration. In the unlikely event of a server crash, you will want to get it up and running as quick as possible.
The following guide shows how to backup a Windows Server 2008 Machine, this includes; User Data, System Settings, Active Directory, and just about and settings you have made.

WinRE in Windows 2008 R2

Windows RE is an extensible recovery platform based on Windows Preinstallation Environment
(Windows PE). Windows RE is a partial version of the OS and includes a set of tools that you
can use to perform system recoveries along with a backup that you created earlier using
Windows Server backup. Windows RE also includes a basic image recovery mechanism
leveraging Windows Setup, helping OEMs and corporations provide system recovery with
minimal effort.

Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP2 released!

indows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 2 (WSUS 3.0 SP2) delivers updates to corporate environments from Microsoft Update. This release adds new features and fixes issues found since the release of the product.

WSUS 3.0 SP2 delivers important customer-requested management, stability, and performance improvements. Some of the features and improvements include the following:

  • Integration with Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • Support for the BranchCache feature in Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • Support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 clients.
  • Compliance Report
  • Windows Update Agent (WUA) offers a collection of performance enhancements, user experience improvements, and bug fixes software updates.

Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Exchange 2010

From September through November, launch events for Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Exchange 2010 are happening across the US. 

Boston’s launch event will be on October 5th at the AMC Boston Common 19. (Other regional stops are NYC on October 20 and Philly on September 28.)

The event will feature content for developers and IT pros. Of course the content will be excellent, but as an added bonus, attendees will get a copy of Windows 7!

In approximately 9 hours, the next version of Windows Server will be published on MSDN + TechNet, and possible available for a free 180 day evaluation from the download centre.

SQL Server 2008 R2 August CTP Available Today

Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7

Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 enables IT administrators to manage roles and features that are installed on remote computers that are running Windows Server 2008 R2 (and, for some roles and features, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2003) from a remote computer that is running Windows 7. It includes support for remote management of computers that are running either the Server Core or full installation options of Windows Server 2008 R2, and for some roles and features, Windows Server 2008. Some roles and features on Windows Server 2003 can be managed remotely by using Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7, although the Server Core installation option is not available with the Windows Server 2003 operating system.

Running SQL Server on Windows 7

Did you know that you can run SQL Server on Windows 7. To enable support for this you must download and install the latest service pack, for SQL Server.

The following version is required –
– SQL Server 2005: SP3 is required
– SQL Server 2008: SP1 is required
– SQL Server 2008 R2 CTP3:Supported without any additional updates

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2

Microsoft has just published the first public test build of the next database software, “SQL Server 2008 R2”. The download was published on MSDN + TechNet on the 10th of August, and will be publicly available on the 12 August.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Available on August 14

For those who are waiting for Windows Server 2008 R2 to be released. It will be available from  TechNet + MSDN starting on the 14th of August.

For those without a TechNet account there will be a 180 day trial available from the 20th of August.
