Microsoft to end support for 4,000 newsgroups
Microsoft said it plans to end support for more than 4,000 old-style newsgroups, starting next month, pushing users instead to discussion forums such as those found on the Microsoft Answers, TechNet and MSDN sites.
Although venerable, Microsoft said that so-called Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) newsgroups are past their time in terms of being usable and secure.
phpBB: Available for the Microsoft Web Platform
Today Microsoft is announcing that the Windows Web Application Gallery and Web Platform Installer (Web PI) now supports the download of the new phpBB release, which supports Windows, IIS and SQL Server.
Version 3.0.7-PL1 of phpBB takes advantage of a number of features for PHP applications on the Microsoft Web Platform with Windows, IIS and SQL Server including:
- SQL Server Driver for PHP 1.1, provides key interoperability for PHP applications to use SQL Server for data storage. Released under the OSI approved MS-PL license and available on CodePlex.
- WinCache Extension for PHP 1.0.1, provides increased performance for PHP applications on Windows and IIS. Released under the BSD license, is available from the PHP Extension Community Library (PECL) website.

Active Directory Federation Services 2.0 helps IT enable users to collaborate across organizational boundaries and easily access applications on-premises and in the cloud, while maintaining application security. Office team releases new Outlook Hotmail Connector
If you have been using Outlook Connector 12.1, you already know that it allows you to manage your Windows Live Hotmail e-mail, calendar, and contacts from within Outlook. Outlook Hotmail Connector 14.0 introduces several improvements. For example, you might notice after upgrading that the connection to Hotmail is more reliable than before, and issues such as blank messages being synchronized to Outlook have been fixed.
Second IE9 Platform Preview Available for Developers
Today, Microsoft announced the release of the second IE9 Preview. This release builds on the first Platform Preview from MIX10 and now contains:
- More improvements to IE9’s performance and support for standards.
- Additional tests submitted to the working groups at the W3C.
- New developer samples the IE9 Test Drive site.
- 10-12 new samples across performance, graphics and HTML5.
SQL Server 2008 R2 is now available to MSDN and TechNet subscribers
For subscribers, SQL Server 2008 R2 is now available in the following editions: Enterprise, Standard, Web, Workgroup and Developer (English Language availability only).

Visio 2010: Visio Viewer
By using Microsoft Visio 2010 Viewer, Visio users can freely distribute Visio drawings and diagrams to team members, partners, customers, or others, even if the recipients do not have Visio installed on their computers. Internet Explorer also allows for printing, although this is limited to the portion of the drawing displayed.
Visio Viewer enables users to discover the advantages of using Visio drawings, charts, and illustrations in a Web-based environment. Visio Viewer is particularly useful for teams that need to collaborate from different locations.
Use Office Web Apps on SkyDrive
It’s been a pretty wild last 8 months since we launched the Office Web Apps Technical Preview on SkyDrive. We’ve had so much demand for the technical preview that we had to expand its availability, and we’ve seen a lot of excitement about the integration of our web apps with the Office 2010 Beta. And as Chris Jones mentioned previously, we’ve also had several thousand people checking out the cool new features we’ve built since then.
Those of you who were able to get in to the technical preview early have enjoyed the ability to view Word , Excel , and PowerPoint files, and to edit Excel and PowerPoint files, right from the browser – no software installation required.
