On Monday, July 11, 2010, Microsoft will finally reveal some news I’ve been itching to share for months: The company is splitting its Windows Small Business Server (SBS) line into two products. Both will be based on the Windows Server 2008 R2 codebase. But where the first of these products, currently codenamed Small Business Server "7," will logically replace existing, traditional SBS products, the other, currently codenamed "Aurora," goes in a far more exciting new direction.

The term “Beta†is understood to mean that things are close to being finished. Well, that’s what we mean anyway. This Beta release represents the near final version of the tools for building applications and games for Windows Phone 7.

Download Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 SP1 Beta
Please Note: This early release of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Beta is not available for home users. The SP1 Beta does not provide new end-user features, and installation is not supported by Microsoft.

“Vail” Remote Web Access and Its Extensibility
This time we will talk about the extensibility of Remote Web Access.
Some of you (esp. ISV developers) probably wanted to integrate your own products/features in this Remote Web Access portal when Windows Home Server was first released. Unfortunately, the answer you got is “No, you cannot extend this site.” We completely understand how sad you were when you heard this answer.
Therefore, we bring you a brand new Remote Web Access site in Vail.

Microsoft to deliver betas of Vail and Aurora servers next week?
It sounds like Microsoft is readying new beta builds of two low-end Windows Server releases — known as “Vail†and “Aurora†— to be released next week, timed with the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, according to my sources.
Vail is the next release of Windows Home Server. Aurora is a small business server based largely on the same code base as Vail. (There’s also a common framework, some kind of “client computer connector,†that extends across the two products, that is codenamed “Colorado.â€)
Microsoft takes aim again at Web developers with new WebMatrix tool suite
Back in 2003, Microsoft had a plan to attract Web site developers to the Microsoft platform with a skunkworks project called WebMatrix. On July 7, 2010, Microsoft brought back that discontinued effort, via the introduction of a new tool suite known as WebMatrix.
Microsoft is making available for download a first beta of the new WebMatrix as of today. The plan — if feedback is positive — is to release the final version before the end of this calendar year.
Outsmarting social engineering threats with SmartScreen
This safety feature is another step Windows Live is taking to protect you from socially engineered attacks and account abuse. This abuse is an industry-wide problem, and we’ve seen a significant uptick in these types of attacks within the context of social networks over the past couple years (details in Microsoft SIR V8, p.119). Social networking targeted scams now account for over half of the phishing attacks that SmartScreen filter blocks in Internet Explorer 8.

Microsoft Corp. today announced a new technology aimed at improving the battery installation process called InstaLoad battery installation technology, which allows users to easily install a battery without regard to positive and negative polarity. Never again will people have to squint to see battery installation diagrams — the device simply works regardless if the battery is installed positive-side-up or positive-side-down.
