Windows 7 Application Compatibility List for IT Professionals

The Windows 7 Application Compatibility List for IT Professionals is a Microsoft Office Excel-based spreadsheet containing software applications which have met Windows 7 Logo Program testing requirements for compatibility with 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 (“Compatible – Windows 7 Logo”).

Additionally, this list contains applications with a status of “Compatible,” “Free update required,” “Paid update required,” “Future compatibility,” and “Not compatible.” Any of these mean the software publisher has stated the compatibility status but note these products have not met the Windows 7 Logo Program testing requirement

Amazon to release Kindle reader for Windows PCs in November

Microsoft managed to keep a couple of news nuggets under wraps until the actual launch of the product on October 22. The most interesting to me was that Amazon is working on a Kindle reader application that will work on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 machines.

The beta of the Kindle reader will be released internationally some time in November, said Laurent Selier, Senior Product Line Manager for Kindle, who was demoing the app at the Windows 7 launch event in New York City today. Users interested in notification about the beta can sign up at Amazon’s Kindle for PC site.

Windows Mobile 7 to feature more operator-specific UXs

If you’ve been hoping Windows Mobile 7 will bring unification to the user experience of the Windows Phones ecosystem then you should give up and go home immediately.

A recent Microsoft job advertisement signals that the Windows Mobile team will not only support the layer of custom interfaces on most Windows Phones today at an OEM level but will even help create custom interfaces for individual operators comes Windows Mobile 7.

Windows Mobile 6.5.1 on the way

When Microsoft launched Windows Mobile 6.5 earlier this month, the latest version of the company’s operating system for cellphones and mobile devices was met with lukewarm (if not hostile) reviews. In a nutshell, the biggest complaint is that the operating system was essentially unchanged from the previous few versions and didn’t offer much to convince users to stick with the platform instead of switching to an iPhone, Blackberry, Google Android, or Palm device.

24 years of Windows package design

Software packaging isn’t exactly the epitome of great design. And, as the world’s most used operating system – and being from Microsoft – Windows has had some rather dull boxes designed for it to sit within.

But it’s also had some great packaging designed for it too, so we’ve gathered together images of the box art from each version of Windows, from 1985’s Windows 1.0 to next week’s Windows 7.

Windows retrospective: boot screens through the ages

With Windows 7 upon us next week, it’s time to take a quick look back at the good, bad and downright ugly of Windows versions past and present.

So our first look down memory lane focuses on the mighty boot screen. Windows boot screens aren’t exactly a scientific representation of the performance of each version of Windows, but the sea changes in the move to Windows 95 and then to XP are clear, while Vista’s blank space probably said more than we ever knew at the time about how the OS would be received. Anyway, on with the (slide)show!

Windows 7 Sells Itself: A Look at the New Ads

About a year ago, Microsoft finally began fighting back against the snarky Apple "I’m a Mac, I’m a PC" ads with a series of its own advertisements which highlighted the diversity of the PC market. Simply dubbed "I’m a PC," the advertising campaign is still a huge hit, and virtually everyone who sees these ads is taken by how nice they are. Unlike Apple’s sarcastic, borderline libelous advertising, the Microsoft ads feature real PC-using people telling real stories. The contrast with Apple is simply amazing.

Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 update

We’ve talked extensively about the improvements that Power Pack 3 for Windows Home Server will deliver for users.  We were proud to show off the beta code of Power Pack 3 at the recent CEDIA 2009 custom installer technology show, where we got lots of positive reception to the feature set.  It’s clear that the anticipation of using Windows Home Server with the upcoming Windows 7 client PC operating system is reaching feverish pitch!  OK, maybe that was a slight exaggeration…But the bottom line is that we’ve gotten tremendous feedback (and test coverage) from you, our enthusiasts, around Power Pack 3 – and we couldn’t be more excited.

Announcing windows live Messenger Web Toolkit v3.5

We’ve been working hard on the Windows Live Messenger Web Toolkit (MWT) which allows you to connect your web site to 330M+ people who use Windows Live Messenger every month! Today we’d like to announce the availability of the Messenger Web Toolkit v3.5 which will enhance the user experience, make it easier to enable sharing via Messenger scenarios on your site (new sharing control), and enable new scenarios (e.g. people who don’t use Messenger will be able to see display pics / names). Specifically, the improvements we have made are:

  • User experience: smoothed out the user experience, added a first run experience, expanded the browser support, increased the performance
  • Developer experience: reduced the amount of code for you to implement “Share via Windows Live” and the Messenger Web Toolkit is now built on the Microsoft Ajax library.
  • New scenarios: Allow people who don’t use Messenger to see display pictures and names of Messenger users.
