802.11n Standard Could Be Finally Approved by September 11

The next-generation wireless 802.11n standard could be made official earlier than expected, according to a recent email from Bob Heile, the chairman of the IEEE 802.15 working group on Personal Area Networks. The mail states that the IEEE 802.11n draft standard has been set for approval at the Standards Review Committee, or RevCom. If 802.11n becomes official, this could set the start to an upcoming wave of new routers and

chips supporting the wireless connectivity standard. There will also be questions regarding the backwards compatibility of the official 802.11n with the previously released draft version of the 802.11n.

I recognize this is an important question to have answered. Many of you have said you want to know exactly when you will be able to get your hands on RTM. Last Monday, I gave an update on RTM to close out some myths. In that update, I also gave a broad timeline on when different groups of people – or “audiences” – would get the final RTM code.

While I have nothing new to add regarding RTM today, I do however have more precise information to give on when you will be able to get RTM. Again, when you can get RTM depends on who you are.

In another move which may or may not be part of its ongoing attempts to appease European antitrust authorities, Microsoft is changing the way Internet Explorer (IE) 8 will prompt users about making IE their default browser.

According to a July 16 post to the Internet Explorer blog, Microsoft is changing the way IE 8 prompts users during browser installation. The change will take effect in mid-August and will only be pertinent to users for whom IE is not set as their default browser. From that post:

Update Rollup 9 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 has been released

We have released Update Rollup 9 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (KB 970162) to the download center. The release of the rollup via Microsoft Update will happen on July 28.

The majority of changes in this rollup are bug fixes. Here are a few that I would like to call out:

  1. KB 969911 – This is bug likely to affect customers who have deployed the Messaging Records Management feature and have specified a storage limit for a managed folder. After a move mailbox, the property which marks the folders as managed is not preserved.
