Keeping the Messenger service running—on a massive scale

If you read Jeff Kunins’ post a few weeks ago about the growth of Windows Live Messenger in the last decade, you already know that Messenger’s growth has been pretty phenomenal. With such growth comes passionate feedback from customers, and a unique set of challenges around supporting those customers with a reliable service. My name is Russ Arun, and I’m a Group Program Manager for Windows Live, focusing on the server side of Messenger.

Windows Live Messenger – a short history

The instant messaging category got going in earnest around 1996 with the debut of ICQ, around the same time that Hotmail was founded. Over the next two years, each of what are now the leading IM services launched in rapid succession: AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, QQ, and our own MSN Messenger.

A look at Windows Home Server “Vail” (Build 7360)

Windows Home Server "Vail", the next major version of this product, will be based on the current generation Windows Server platform (Windows Server 2008 R2) and will share a number of features and capabilities with Small Business Server and Essential Business Server. Unfortunately, Microsoft has been tight-lipped about Vail and the quality of information we have today is lacking, to say the least. Fortunately, a recently leaked build of Vail – tagged build 7360 – has shed some light on what the WHS team has been working on.

There will be so much Windows Mobile, Microsoft can’t fit it in one event in February

Something big must be brewing in Windows Mobile land because apparently it will be such a revelation Microsoft can’t even explain it all in one day, let alone one event.

Moments ago, Microsoft sent out a press release detailing the February schedule for upcoming events for the financial analysts and investors community.

The Man Behind Windows 7’s Fast Start

REDMOND, Wash. – Jan. 25, 2010 – Months before Windows 7 launched, Aaron Dietrich’s boss forwarded him an early product review from CNET, an online technology news site. Until then, Dietrich hadn’t heard an outsider’s take on the new operating system. When he read the article, he found a prominent—and glowing—mention of lightning-fast start-up times.

“I always viewed myself as just one piece of the whole Windows puzzle,” Dietrich says. “It’s really when we brought it all together that we got such a great product.”

"It gave me a really good feeling," Dietrich says. "I thought, ‘Wow, it’s not just that we’re on the right path, but we’re really making a change in perception for reviewers and the general public here.’"

Windows MultiPoint Server — a multiseat computing solution worthy for the home?

Late last year, Microsoft quietly announced a new server operating system called “Windows MultiPoint Server 2010” aimed at the educations market based on the Microsoft Research project MultiMouse. As it nears its release, the more I look at this product the more I see this as a potential multiseat computing solution even for the home.

Hyper-V and Domain Controllers – Demo Tips and Tricks

In the past I have talked about the different configuration options when running Domain Controllers and Hyper-V.  One of the more interesting configurations I discussed then was having a Hyper-V server joined to a domain where the domain controller was a virtual machine running on the same instance of Hyper-V.

This is actually a configuration I use all of the time when I am doing public demonstrations.  The reason why I do this is because:

  1. I do not like to ship hardware – as I have had hardware get damaged in shipping too many times.
  2. I do not trust networking in a demo environment – so if I can keep it all on one computer, I will.
  3. I often have to demonstrate software / configurations that need a domain controller.

This all means that I need to have a domain controller in a virtual machine on my laptop.

Over the course of many demos – I have gleaned a few interesting tips and tricks for this sort of configuration.

Visio 2010 Beta coming soon…

It’s been several months since the Technical Preview was released and we started talking about Visio 2010 on this blog.  The product team has been hard at work responding to your feedback, fixing bugs and polishing the application.  Next month we are scheduled to release the Visio 2010 Beta, which will be open to the public.  If you haven’t had the opportunity to try Visio 2010 for yourself, this is your chance.

Sometimes it’s hard to wait patiently for new software releases, so to put your mind at ease we’ve created a special alert system that will notify you when you can download the Beta.  Head over to http://visiotoolbox.com/2010/ and click on the big green button.  You’ll also find a handy diagram explaining the software delivery process (approximately) and several other pages highlighting some of the new capabilities of Visio 2010 and Visio Services.
