Use Office Web Apps on SkyDrive

It’s been a pretty wild last 8 months since we launched the Office Web Apps Technical Preview on SkyDrive. We’ve had so much demand for the technical preview that we had to expand its availability, and we’ve seen a lot of excitement about the integration of our web apps with the Office 2010 Beta. And as Chris Jones mentioned previously, we’ve also had several thousand people checking out the cool new features we’ve built since then.

Those of you who were able to get in to the technical preview early have enjoyed the ability to view Word , Excel , and PowerPoint files, and to edit Excel and PowerPoint files, right from the browser – no software installation required.

Office 2010 Reaches RTM

Earlier today we reached the release-to-manufacturing (RTM) milestone for Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010!

RTM is the final engineering milestone of a product release and our engineering team has poured their heart and soul into reaching this milestone. It is also an appropriate time to re-emphasize our sincere gratitude to the more than 5,000 organizations and partners who have worked with us on rapid deployment and testing of the products. Since the start of our public beta in November 2009, we’ve had more than 7.5 million people download the beta version – that’s more than 3 times the number of 2007 beta downloads! The feedback that we’ve received from all these programs has shaped the set of products we’re excited about, and that I’m sure will delight our customers.

Microsoft’s big gamble with free Office

-Microsoft has a new plan to make more money from Office: give it away.

With Office 2010, one of the biggest changes is how many ways there are to get Microsoft’s most profitable software program for free.

In addition to the free, browser-based Office Web Apps, Microsoft is also offering PC makers the ability to install a basic version of Office on new computers. The new program, Office Starter, includes a stripped-down version of Word and Excel. PC makers, retailers and Microsoft can all make money if the PC buyer later upgrades to a paid version of Office.

Using Office Web Apps to Create New Files

Office Web Apps can be installed as part of a SharePoint deployment. Also, Office Web Apps will be available on Windows Live SkyDrive. One difference between Office Web Apps in these two environments is how you create new files.
